Day 2 Gortatole
After a good night’s sleep the boys and girls woke up refreshed and ready for a jam packed day of activities. We all enjoyed a filling breakfast before heading off in our groups to start our first session of the day, which was either Bushcraft, Climbing or Kayaking.
Those who were doing Bushcraft started by collecting tinder, using some of the bark from Birch trees as it is very dry, they then went on a search around the grounds to find small sticks and dry leaves and branches that they could use to build a fire. In their small groups they had to build up and light their own fires and they learnt that as well as the bark, leaves and sticks they could also use cotton wool to help with lighting them. They were taught about the surface area of the fire and how it is better to build a small fire up vertically using the sticks instead of spreading the fire wider. When they had successfully lit their fire they were able to toast marshmallows to make s’mores and also popped some popcorn.
The climbing wall was an exciting and challenging activity, with each person pushing themselves to do the best they could. They learnt about the skills needed in rock climbing, including balance and where to put their weight when moving, decision making and how important it is to think ahead as they plan their next steps and where to place their hands and feet to make their next move easier. The children also learnt that their legs are stronger than their arms so it is all about pushing up with their legs rather than pulling themselves up with their arms. Some of our P7’s were able to surpass the goals they made while they were here last year and everyone enjoyed pushing themselves to try new things.
Down at the Lough the weather was a little bit windier than yesterday so paddle boarding was not available, however they boys and girls had a whale of a time kayaking. They worked together to get into lines on the water and had to do different challenges like standing up in their kayak and making sure they balanced well so they wouldn’t fall over. They then had fun jumping in and splashing each other making this activity a laughter filled one!
This afternoon our groups headed off for another caving adventure in one of the Marble Arch Caves, where we were fascinated with all the facts about the local environment. Our third group enjoyed a session on the climbing wall and bushcraft.
After dinner we played some table tennis, pool and table football as well as some board games, before having a fun time exploring the grounds during an orienteering activity. The boys and girls had to read maps to find the markers across the property and use the hole punchers to mark their cards.
To finish an action packed day we decided a mellow movie night would be a great activity to help us wind down before bed.
