Investigating Ice

6th Feb 2020

Following on from our frosty morning observations we decided to become scientists to investigate the quickest method to dissolve an ice cube.  We brainstormed some ideas and came up with a list of things to investigate:

Set it in the sun

Put it on the radiator

Put it in salt

Put it in warm water

Put it in cold water

Put it in sugar

Put it in sand

The children helped to set up the investigation, finding  the materials and labelling our work.  We predicted that the ice cube would melt quickest in the sun. Observing the ice cubes we were surprised to find that the warm water dissolved the ice cube quickest.  Given time all ice cubes melted.

Our conclusion was that warm water would be the quickest method of dissolving ice on your car windscreen!!
