Earth Day

22nd Apr 2024
Room 1 began their day with an Earth Day story and song. Through our discussions it was encouraging that so many recalled important ways to help the earth. Children shared ideas which we wrote as a list of actions:
 -Don’t drop litter.
- Reduce, reuse and recycle waste.
-Turn off the tap and don’t waste water.
- Don’t waste electric: turn off lights, tvs and computers which aren’t needed.
- Plant  trees and flowers.

Outside we looked for change in the school grounds. The children found lots of buds, new leaves and flowers on our walk.  We were very impressed by the blossoms on the apple trees. In the playground we used chalk to create images of favourite living things to celebrate Earth Day.

This afternoon in play, we had further opportunities to celebrate Earth Day playing recycling games, creating fruits and  vegetables in dough and painting  our own blossom pictures. Our garden shop was a popular place to visit as was the water tray. The children used iPads to record their ideas on litter and sowed seeds using recycled plastic containers. We had some interesting creations made using junk art  materials giving us lots of time to think about how to reuse waste.
