Communication

11th Feb 2023

As part of our learning about inventors, yesterday Room 5 children enjoyed a visit from Owen, Gabriella’s dad, to tell us all about his job working for BT. We were really interested in this as we’ve been learning about inventions such as the telephone and Alexander Graham Bell and it was fascinating to learn how this has changed through the years.

Owen brought in an old analogue phone with the dial and children found it interesting that to make a phonecall you had to dial each digit. Owen explained how communication has changed and now fibre optic and data have replaced wires. He told us all about Open Reach, EE and BT and the children found these changes very interesting as they’ve only known a digital world.

Owen also shared BT’s role in nationwide security and intercepting cyber attacks….and how advancement in technology has progressed from when BT was the Post Office and the main form of communication was sending letters or telegrams. We even learnt than when we place a 999 call that BT answer it!

Thank you Owen for such an interesting visit. Perhaps some boys and girls will be inspired to pursue the world of technology in years to come  as so many of them love coding.

Thank you too for the goodies! 😊
