Our Woodland Trail

2nd Dec 2022

Room 1 had a great outing today at CAFRE’s Greenmount Campus. We were met by Jo our RSPB leader who took us on a guided tour of the woodland trail. After getting off the coach we made our way up to the educational classroom for our snack to ensure we had plenty of energy for our walk. In the courtyard Jo taught us a new game, when we saw her arms outstretched like an owl we all had to crouch down and pretend to be mice and freeze. Following this we made our way back down the hill to find food for the squirrel. We then pretended to be a squirrel and hid our pine cone Jo challenged us to find these again at the end of the trail. Walking through the trail we looked for leaves of different colours and shapes and specific nuts.We listened carefully for birds and learnt that both the mummy and daddy robin sing all through the winter. Jo introduced us to a bat and talked to us about hibernation showing us a bat house put up for this purpose.  We watched the various ducks on the pond noting the different colours of the mummy and daddy ducks. After that we made our way to a clearing  where a large beech tree had fallen. There Jo asked the children to build a home for her hedgehog to hibernate in over winter. This became a game as teacher had to find the hedgehog and wasn’t allowed to watch their work. The children were fascinated by the different shapes and sizes of sticks we found and completed some mark making activities before reaching a large elm tree.  Jo showed us a toy swallow and encouraged the children to fly to find food. She then told them that it was getting too cold for the swallows to find insects to eat so they had to prepare  to migrate on a long flight to Africa.  The children throughly enjoyed this opportunity to run around. By this stage it was time for lunch and as it was so mild we had an outdoor picnic! What a wonderful day out thank you to Jo and the RSPB for organising this event and to the children and staff for making it a special day out.🙂
