Outdoor Literacy

17th Dec 2019

P1 had great fun outdoors in the sunshine today taking part in literacy activities planned with our Shared Education partner school. Both P1 teachers met to plan a lesson to promote literacy skills.

In class we shared the Christmas story entitled “Laura’s Star.” The children in this book had been looking forward to spending an amazing Christmas with their aunt.  Unfortunately their car broke down and they had to stay home for Christmas with no tree.  Laura found a little leftover tree which look very dismal but thanks  to the magical powers of Laura’s special star their own tiny tree became a special symbol for Christmas.

We decided to focus our learning on the word Christmas and use stars and trees as special symbols.

The class was divided into 2 groups for this lesson switching over when tasks were completed.  The outdoor activity involved a star hunt to find the stars to match the letters which make the word Christmas. Children searched for letters, matched and named the letter sound. We then used the letter stars to build rhyming words such as hat, mat, rat, cat. Children then drew their own star shapes and recorded either letters or cvc words using chalk.

Inside the children used tree shapes to develop their fine motor skills weaving wool to create a tree shaped decoration. This  required lots of concentration and should make a lovely addition to your Christmas tree.
