“How do penguins keep dry?” That question encouraged us to think! Our research suggested that penguins have waterproof feathers which help to keep them dry. This works in the same way as our waterproof coats. We wanted to test the theory that the waxy coating found on penguin feathers helped to do this. We decided to use crayons, pencils and felt tips to put our theory to the test predicting that water would run off the penguins coloured in using crayons. Our observations certainly proved this with water droplets forming on the surface of our penguins. These penguins stayed much drier than their paper friends. 🐧
