Sentinus STEM Event

4th Jun 2025

What a fabulous day our Room 5 children had at Sentinus STEM event in Craigavon today.

Our team of budding inventors took part in different Sentinus Primary STEM challenges - one was a Construction Challenge and the other was a K’Nex Challenge. The teams were issued with a brief at the start of the challenge which explained exactly what they had to do. The groups had an hour and a half to design and build an Air-Driven Vehicle which had to be capable of carrying a cream egg. The teams were able to use 2 dowel rods, 2 straws, a balloon, 4 plastic wheels, 1 sheet of heavy card and a plastic food tray. They were also able to use sellotape, scissors and a hole punch etc.
The staff commented on the children’s amazing knowledge on what might affect the cars’ movement like friction and aerodynamics; they were very impressed!
In the K’Nex Challenge each team were tasked to make a drawbridge which opened and closed and was taller and wider than 20cm. The theme was castles and the children had different K’Nex pieces to choose from as well as string.

The teams worked brilliantly together and produced amazing structures.

The class also enjoyed a micro-bit session where they programmed a game with asteroids and spaceships.

The final event was watching a show with, 'Mark the Science Guy,' where they witnessed Mark set fire to his hand and marvelled at how he made tornadoes. The children really were fascinated by this.

Our teams did us proud with their inventions and also their behaviour. An all round amazing educational visit! 🤩
