Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning has been a big focus for us in recent years as we understand and appreciate the benefits to learning and well being of being outdoors. Not only do the younger classes participate in Welly Wednesday every week and outdoor play but all classes take their literacy and numeracy learning outside. We use the outdoors to also develop our thinking skills…to problem solve, make decisions, work together and self manage the tasks we are set.

We enjoy using our local community to enhance our learning eg Moyola Estate as well as our own wonderful facilities eg our Polytunnel and each class has their own planting space.

We love outdoor learning and participating in national events such as The RSPCB Big Bird Watch annually.

We have also enjoyed developing our knowledge in horticulture with our specifically trained staff member and children have enjoyed planting, learning about the growth and nurturing of plants through a horticulture after school club. They also enjoyed visiting our local flower shop in the village and creating lovely plant gifts for residents at our local care home.

Forest School has also been developed by our own Forest School teacher, Miss Glendinning. Children have enjoyed den marking, working with natural materials, whittling wood, gathering materials to make a fire, using the Kelly Kettle and also making s’mores!
